FAQ's
Can't find your answer? Contact us or check the Help guide.
Is Fabwriter free to use?
Yes. The free editor at /free/editor is completely free and requires no account. You can write, organise, and export your book without signing up. A paid plan with AI features and cloud sync is coming soon.
Do I need an account to write?
No. The free editor works entirely in your browser with no login required. Your work is saved automatically in your browser's local storage.
Will I lose my writing if I clear my browser data?
Yes — local storage is tied to your browser. We strongly recommend using the Backup & restore feature (the export icon in the toolbar) to download a .swbak file regularly. That file is a complete snapshot of all your chapters, scenes, and notes.
How do I back up my work?
Click the database-export icon (cylinder with an up arrow) in the editor toolbar, then click "Download backup". Save the .swbak file somewhere safe — Google Drive, Dropbox, or your desktop.
Can I restore a backup on a different device?
Yes. Open the backup modal on the new device, click Choose file, select your .swbak file, and confirm. All your chapters, scenes, and settings will be restored.
What export formats are supported?
You can export your book as DOCX (Microsoft Word), PDF, plain TXT, or Markdown. Use the Export button in the editor header.
Can I import a Word document?
Yes. Click "Add panel" in the toolbar and choose "Import DOCX". The importer reads heading styles to split the document into chapters and scenes automatically.
What is a panel?
The workspace is made up of panels — draggable, resizable windows each containing a scene, your synopsis, character notes, plot tracker, or free-form notes. You can have as many open at once as you like.
Can I have multiple chapters open at the same time?
Yes. Open as many scene panels as you want side-by-side. You can also arrange them in multiple columns by using the left/right arrow buttons in each panel header.
Is there a word count target?
Yes. Click "Book details" (top-right of the editor) to set your target word count. The Stats modal (chart icon in the toolbar) shows a progress bar toward that goal.
Is AI writing assistance available?
AI features — including an inline writing assistant and smart rewrite tools — are planned for registered users. The free editor shows a sign-up prompt in the AI panel as a preview.
Is my writing private?
In the free editor, your writing never leaves your browser — it is stored only in local storage on your device. No data is sent to our servers.
Does Fabwriter work on mobile?
Yes. The editor is designed to work on phones and tablets. The chapter sidebar becomes a slide-out drawer on small screens, and panels stack vertically for easy scrolling.
Can I collaborate with a co-author in Fabwriter?
Real-time collaboration is on the roadmap. For now, the easiest workaround is to export your work, share the file, and import it on the other device.
How do I add a prologue in Fabwriter?
Click the + button at the top of the chapter list in the sidebar and choose "Add prologue". The prologue is inserted before Chapter 1 and is excluded from chapter numbering.
How do I rename a chapter or scene in Fabwriter?
Click directly on the chapter or scene name in the sidebar to enter edit mode. Press Enter or click away to save.
Can I reorder chapters and scenes in Fabwriter?
Yes. Drag the grip handle (⠿) next to any chapter or scene to reorder it. You can also drag scenes between chapters.
What happened to my data after a browser update in Fabwriter?
Browser updates should not affect local storage. However, clearing site data, switching browsers, or using private/incognito mode will result in data loss. Always keep a .swbak backup.
I have a feature request or found a bug in Fabwriter — how do I report it?
Use the Contact page to get in touch. We read every message.
